South Australian space sector set for take-off

The latest South Australia Club event was quite literally out of this world. South Australia Club members and guests were very lucky to be joined by the Premier of South Australia The Hon Steven Marshall to hear about the State’s space capabilities and its pitch to be home to the National Space Agency.

We like to think this evening was the highlight of his visit, well ahead of his meeting with the French President and audience with Her Majesty The Queen.

The Premier was joined by Andrea Boyd, an impressive South Australian who is a Flight Operations Engineer at the International Space Station Flight Control team. In fact, she is the only Australian Flight Operations Engineer in the world!

The State is home to seventy space-related organisations and last year over $52 million of investment was committed to the industry in South Australia through venture capital, universities, local industry and government.

“Almost every day there is a new development – a new technology developed by one of our incredibly talented local companies; a new joint venture; or a new company looking to invest in South Australia,” said the Premier.

Andrea is the only Australian working at the International Space Station Flight Control team worldwide. She is also a great supporter of her home State and an advocate of the National Space Agency being in Adelaide.

South Australia’s Agent General Bill Muirhead was absolutely enamoured with Andrea’s career.

“We are so proud of the work you do. I am also pleased that the only voice astronauts hear in space from Europe’s mission control has an Aussie accent!” Bill laughed.
