This month InDaily presented their new award, ‘40 Under 40‘ recognising the impressive work of forty individuals, including Dr Michelle Perugini. These inaugural awards celebrate the passion, vision and achievements of South Australia’s leading business entrepreneurs under the age of forty. Nominees are recognised not only for their stand out personal determination and commercial drive, but also their philanthropic pursuits.
Whilst this award highlighted the success of Michelle in South Australia, they had been making strides overseas for quite some time.
Michelle is part of the dynamic founding trio with her husband Dr Don Perugini and Dr Jonathon Hall who have set their sights on the global IVF market with a world first solution, ‘Life Whisperer’.
Life Whisperer is a software solution which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to better identify healthy embryos for IVF, and to ultimately improve outcomes for couples wanting to have children.
Australia’s first baby conceived by in vitro fertilisation (IVF) is in her late 30s. Since then more than 200,000 children have been born in Australia as a result of IVF-type treatments.
Their program learns through image recognition algorithms on large datasets of embryo images with matched pregnancy outcomes. The trained AI can effectively assess and identify morphological features that constitute a viable embryo. The Life Whisperer tool allows clinicians to drag and drop single images of patient embryos taken immediately prior to transfer and returns an instant report as to the viability of each embryo to support the clinician’s decision about which embryo to transfer (as seen in the diagram below). Unlike other solutions, Life Whisperer’s web-based approach is non-invasive, does not require specialized hardware, requires little process change in the clinic, and can be delivered at a low cost to patients.
Life Whisperer is currently partnering with clinics globally to conduct additional studies, which also forms part of the pre-sales activity and will support regulatory approvals in different countries. Life Whisperer is already conducting clinical trials with fertility providers in the USA and Malaysia and is negotiating trials with IVF clinics in other countries including Canada, Dubai, China, Australia and the UK. Due to the low level of risk and non-invasive nature of Life Whisperer, regulatory approvals for Life Whisperer are relatively simple in most countries.
In addition to their most recent accolade, Life Whisperer have been recipients of many other awards including:
- Second prize in The Second China (Shenzhen) Innovation & Entrepreneurship International Competition in Sydney in 2018;
- APAC Global Winner of the ‘Best Idea – One to Watch’ category in the 2017 Talent Unleashed Awards judged by Steve Wozniak;
- Won two National iAwards (Merit): Start Up of the Year, and Big Data / Machine Learning Innovation of the Year;
